The Philippines boasts 36,000 kilometers of coastline, the second longest in the world, with 60% of its population directly relying on ocean-based livelihoods. As the country strives for progress, it also continues to face significant environmental challenges. What strategies can we implement to address these challenges while ensuring the sustainable development of our ocean? This panel discussion will explore the intricacies of crafting people-centered, evidence-based policies for the sustainable management of the Philippines’ coastal and marine resources. Focusing on the intersection of environmental conservation and economic growth, the dialogue will use the Blue Economy Bill as a case study to examine how to balance these priorities while protecting marine ecosystems and fostering opportunities for coastal communities. The session will also highlight how research guides inclusive approaches to development policies that ensure both sustainability and livelihood security. At the heart of the conversation is the vision of a thriving Blue Economy, driving both ecological health and sustainable development. Organized by Rizal Library Ambassadors (RLA).
